Roots:  The Saga of an American Family is a novel written by Alex Haley in 1976.   It was adapted into a 12-hour mini series Roots and a 14-hour sequel Roots:  The Next Generation in 1979.  Although widely criticized and regarded,  Roots had a significant impact on the growing interest of genealogy.
